Okay everybody, get yr weekend started right and … “Sugarfoot!”  Courtesy of Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears.

For a Wedsday music fix, how about Brandi Carlile doing her song, “The Story” with a symphony orchestra?

Speaking of great live bands, DMB was on Letterman last night.  Another summer has gone by, still havent seen them in person.  And for those of you who dont know, this past Spring they lost their sax player, LeRoi Moore, in an ATV accident.  He’s the GrooGrux King of whom they are speaking.  And this is his song.  So even though this song is driving, it’s still bittersweet.

And check out Carter Beauford on the drums.  Cuh-razy!

The test of a great band … how they perform live.  Check out the Airborne Toxic Event on Letterman.  Great … live.

New song from NEEDTOBREATHE hit this week, and it’s good.  In fact, if you havent heard them, listen at least to the first three songs they have on their player on MySpace.

You’ll thank me.

“Do not allow this world to mold you in its image.  Instead, be transformed from the inside out by renewing your mind.” ~Romans 12.2, vnt

Christian Reality TV.

It was a lead story on World News Tonight last night—Christian Reality TV.

And the question was whether or not Christianity was able to define culture, or whether culture was defining Christianity.

Like Stryper, they said.  Big hair.  Spandex.  Talk of God.  The edginess, I guess, came from the fact that the album title was “To Hell with the Devil.”  (Yeah, I owned it.)

An expert interviewed for the segment made a good point.  He was from Fuller, and he said that if we truly believed in an amazing Creator, than the best praise we could give is to try and do amazingly creative things.

Adding God to hair metal songs is not necessarily “amazingly” creative.

Nor is rewriting the movie “Remember the Titans” and calling it “Facing the Giants.”  (And dont get me wrong,  I appreciate “Facing the Giants.”  But I cant help comparing it to “Titans,” which is a great movie.)

Nor is following around and filming the exploits of Christians like they did Ozzy, Anna, Paris, Nicole, Jessica & Nick, the Bachelor, Survivor.

The Church has it within her to find creative ways of sharing the GoodNews without having to rip off pop culture.  The Church can just be itself, by offering a space for people to come and be themselves.  And whatever happens, happens.

I write kid songs.  And they’re about God.  But I dont take Buffett songs and insert God’s name.  (Or at least I hope that’s not what they sound like—more often, I get Adam Sandler comparisons.)  And I’ve got an on-line comic going, but I hope it doesnt come across as Bloom County starring God.  (It’s just my version of our dog and one of our cats.)

And I dont know if they’re “amazingly creative” or not.  These are just some of the gifts I enjoy using that may express faith in a creative way, but not by ripping off something already out there in God’s name.

So do something amazingly creative for God.  Something that’s never been done.  And let it come from within you.

“There is shock and sadness in the Christian community over word that famed Christian music singer Ray Boltz has publicly announced he’s living a homosexual lifestyle”(onenewsnow.com).

So here’s what I’m looking for … is this true?  Not the lifestyle thing but the “shock and sadness” part?

I’m not going into my personal thoughts on the issue, because those are my personal thoughts.  But as a pastor, the problem I see with all this is the fact that some of the hateful, hurtful language used in pulpits and in the media basically sends the message that there are certain people who are not welcome in a church.

Seriously?  Who’s not welcome in a church?  One of the best church billboards I’ve ever seen—You’re not too bad to come in, nor too good to stay away.  There aint NONE of us who are worthy of stepping foot in the presence of God—not w/o grace.

To clarify one thing about my own denomination, the topic of our discussion about the issue is technically about leadership and what is essential for ordination standards.  And as a pastor I have vowed to uphold the standards that leaders of the church should be faithful in their marriages or chaste in singleness.  I’ve also vowed that the marriages I perform as a pastor are between a man and a woman.  That’s what I have vowed as a pastor.  What I have not vowed, though, is to tell someone they are not welcome in a church or that they are a worse sinner than I.

Here’s what I hope does NOT happen to Ray Boltz because of this:  I hope that people dont burn his CDs as they burnt Beatles records back in the 60s.  I hope that people dont stop listening to his music—that “Thank-You” song is a big deal for a lot of people out there (not me, but a lot of people).  And I hope that Ray Boltz keeps going to church.

Greek for "sincerity, honesty, integrity," a variant of which appears in Titus 2.7---"In your teaching show sincerity." In my blogging, and in my faith, I hope to do the same.
